The key needs coaxing

Jiggling, lifting, easing in and back — it all means the pins are no longer meeting the key cuts cleanly. Either the cylinder is wearing, or dust and old lubricant have set into a paste.

Earliest stage, most fixable. Cleaned and lubricated correctly here, most cylinders run for years. Ignored, the extra force applied each time is what eventually snaps a key.

The handle needs a second attempt

On a multipoint lock, lifting the handle throws several bolts simultaneously. If it only engages on the second go, the bolts are not meeting their keepers squarely — a door and frame problem rather than a lock problem.

Worth acting on quickly. The gearbox is what eventually fails under repeated force, and it is one of the few components where replacement really is the only route. Adjusting keepers costs a fraction of that.

It only works in one position

Works with the door open but not closed, or only at one point in the swing. Alignment is marginal and the mechanism is operating under load it was not built for. Same cause and same fix as above. Anything that genuinely cannot wait is handled as an emergency locksmith call, at any hour.

Grey dust on the key

Check the key after use. Fine metal powder means the internals are wearing against each other. Highveld dust gets into cylinders through summer and the first heavy rains turn it abrasive.

On commercial doors, multiply everything

A domestic front door might be used six times a day. An office entrance can be used several hundred. Every wear mechanism above runs on a completely different timescale.

Add door closers to the list. A closer that has drifted out of adjustment means a door that no longer latches reliably, which is a security problem well before anyone logs it as a fault. What it costs to act early

None of these is an emergency. All of them are cheaper at a booked daytime appointment than at closing time or midnight, and most resolve with cleaning, lubrication and adjustment rather than new hardware.

The five symptoms, in the order they usually arrive

A door that only locks if you lean on it. That is alignment rather than the lock. A key that goes in stiffly and comes out reluctantly, which is grit rather than wear on outdoor hardware. And a bolt that throws only part of the way, which means the keeper and the bolt are no longer meeting squarely.

Why it is nearly always the door, not the lock

The most useful test anybody can do costs nothing. Open the door fully, then operate the lock with the door standing open — turn the key, throw the bolt, lift the handle. If you are shut out while reading this, it is a house lockout and it is worth phoning rather than reading.

If the mechanism works freely in the air and struggles when the door is closed, the lock is fine and the alignment is not. The door has moved: timber has taken up moisture, hinges have settled, a frame has shifted, and a strike plate that lined up two years ago no longer does.

That is an adjustment rather than a replacement, and it is a fraction of the price. The reason is that locks on a house were frequently fitted at the same time, by the same person, from the same batch, and they have had the same weather and roughly the same use since. They do not fail randomly; they fail as a group, over a year or two.

So a single stiff cylinder on a house that was secured in one go twenty years ago is usually the first of several. Dealing with them in one booked visit costs far less than three separate callouts, because the callout is shared. That is a lock repair conversation rather than a replacement one.

Because most of these are diagnosable from a description, the five minutes before you call are worth more than they sound.

What to photograph before you phone

Photograph the cylinder from the edge of the door, so the profile and how far it protrudes are both visible. Photograph the edge of the door itself, showing the mechanism and the keepers. And photograph the strike plate on the frame, because alignment faults show up there before they show up anywhere else.

Three photographs and one sentence about what the lock did before it stopped is enough for most diagnoses, and it is what puts the right parts on the vehicle rather than making a second trip necessary.

What it looks like on a business door

The same symptoms arrive far sooner on a door operated two hundred times a day, and they are read differently because the consequence is different.

A latch that has stopped throwing cleanly on a shop or office entrance is not an irritation, it is a door that will be standing unlocked at some point in the week. A closer drifting out of adjustment produces the same result. Both are cheap to correct and both are ignored until they cause a genuine problem. What none of this predicts

Two failures give no warning at all, and it is only fair to say so rather than implying every problem announces itself.
