Four different things, often confused

Most forced domestic entries never defeat the lock. They defeat the timber around it, the strike plate, or hinges fixed with short screws into architrave rather than structure.
Reinforcing the strike plate, using screws that reach the structural stud, and fitting security hinges usually buys more real resistance per rand than upgrading a cylinder that was already adequate. Upgrades of this kind fall under security lock upgrades.

Spending in a sensible order
Sort the door and frame, upgrade the primary cylinder, extend to secondary doors, then consider electronics. Reversing that order is common and expensive.
A smart lock on a door that can be shouldered open is a convenience purchase rather than a security one. Perfectly reasonable as a deliberate choice; less so as a misunderstanding.
What the phrase actually has to mean
"High security" is marketing wording rather than a standard, and two products carrying it can behave completely differently. The useful question is which specific attack a cylinder resists.
Picking, which is manipulation of the pins. Drilling, which hardened inserts defeat. Bumping, which needs particular internal design to resist. And snapping, which is the attack that actually gets used on the Euro profile cylinders fitted to most aluminium and composite doors around Sandton, because it is fast and needs no skill.
A cylinder can be excellent against one and ordinary against another. Any supplier who cannot say which of the four a product addresses is selling you a label rather than a specification.
The frame matters more than the cylinder
This is the part almost every quote leaves out. A superb cylinder held by a strike plate fixed with short screws into a soft architrave is bypassed by force going around the lock rather than through it.
A reinforced strike plate with long screws reaching the structure behind the frame costs a fraction of a good cylinder and does more. On timber doors it is frequently the difference between a door that resists and a door that opens with one shoulder.
So the honest sequence on any property is frame first, cylinder second. If you are quoted a list of hardware with nothing said about the frame, you are being quoted for the visible half of the job. Anything that genuinely cannot wait is handled as an emergency locksmith call, at any hour.
The doors people forget, and why they matter most
On a property with mature planting or a long boundary, the exposure is not at the front. It is on the side and the back, where somebody can work unseen from the street and from the neighbours.
The patio slider is the clearest example. A standard slider latch is a convenience catch that stops the door blowing open; a hookbolt that engages behind the frame, an anti-lift block and a clean track turn it into a genuine obstacle, and the whole job is quick and inexpensive.
After that come the outbuildings — a garage side door, a store room, staff quarters — which usually wear whatever lock came off the main house years ago. They are cheap to improve because the doors are simple, and on many properties around Rivonia they are the actual weak point.

On most properties that is three or four items dominated by labour rather than hardware, and anything past it wants a specific reason. Where a mechanism is worn rather than weak, it is a lock repair question instead, and where the real risk is keys in unknown hands it is a lock change — neither of which a stronger cylinder solves.

Anything electronic comes last, if at all.
